There are a few things that you need to keep in mind when cleaning copper pans.
- it can be messy job
- copper is a delicate material
- some metal cleaners contain small granules which may damage your pans
Keeping everything clean
As you work, you will notice that your cleaning fluid turns black and has a tendendcy to spread about and get “everywhere”.
You will need to make an effort to keep both your work area and yourself clean.
- cover your work surface with absorbent kitchen towels or old newspapers
- don’t be tempted to clean your pans on your lap
- your clothes will almost certainly become stained if you do
- messy hands? – you may find a thin pair of surgical gloves very useful!
Cleaning your pans
- wash your pans in warm soapy water
- rinse well
- apply copper cleaner to the surface, with soft damp sponge or cloth
- rub gently until the tarnish is removed
- rinse immediately in hot water
- make sure that all excess copper cleaner is removed
- be sure to check carefully around the handle joints
- rinse again in warm water
- dry carefully with a soft cloth
- store ready for use
Choosing a Copper Cleaner
- most supermarkets sell liquid metal cleaners
- Mauviel manufacture a very efficient copper cleaner
- a soft sponge applicator is also supplied with the copper cleaner
