How to Clean Copper Pans

There are a few things that you need to keep in mind when cleaning copper pans.

  • it can be messy job
  • copper is a delicate material
  • some metal cleaners contain small granules which may damage your pans

Keeping everything clean

As you work, you will notice that your cleaning fluid turns black and has a tendendcy to spread about and get “everywhere”.
You will need to make an effort to keep both your work area and yourself clean.

  • cover your work surface with absorbent kitchen towels or old newspapers
  • don’t be tempted to clean your pans on your lap
  • your clothes will almost certainly become stained if you do
  • messy hands? – you may find a thin pair of surgical gloves very useful!

Cleaning your pans

  • wash your pans in warm soapy water
  • rinse well
  • apply copper cleaner to the surface, with soft damp sponge or cloth
  • rub gently until the tarnish is removed
  • rinse immediately in hot water
  • make sure that all excess copper cleaner is removed
  • be sure to check carefully around the handle joints
  • rinse again in warm water
  • dry carefully with a soft cloth
  • store ready for use

Choosing  a Copper Cleaner

  • most supermarkets sell liquid metal cleaners
